Questions

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. Indexing and search both run on your Mac and keep working with the internet off. Nothing about your library leaves the machine — the app only ever writes to its own folder.

Does it move or change my photos?

No. It reads files where they are, so folder structure, originals, and edits stay put. Even removing a folder from Searchables only drops those images from the index — the files on disk are untouched.

What formats does it understand?

JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG 2000, TIFF, PSD, PSB, and camera RAW from most makers — close to forty extensions. RAW uses the embedded preview when there is one. Open Folders → Settings to turn formats on or off and set the file size limit, which starts at 20 MB.

How big a library can it handle?

Hundreds of thousands of photos is fine. The first pass looks at every file once; after that Searchables checks your folders every couple of minutes and only reads what is new or changed.

What if my external drive is unplugged?

Search still works — anything already indexed stays searchable, with thumbnails. For a drive you unplug often, switch on Offline previews for that folder and Searchables keeps a full-size copy on your Mac so the big view works too. Board pins do this on their own, so a board stays viewable and exportable either way.

Can I search just one folder?

Yes. The folder menu next to the search field limits results to whichever folders you tick, and it remembers the choice between sessions. In Folders → Settings you can also keep a subfolder out of results permanently without un-indexing it.

What if I cancel?

Photos and the index stay on the Mac. Resubscribe later and you’re back where you left off.
